To reduce hunger through a unified effort to provide hunger relief, education and advocacy. We will accomplish this goal by:
- Building reliable and continuing sources of nutritious food for the hungry.
- Securing food and funding to assist its members in meeting the needs of less fortunate people.
- Promoting hunger relief organizations and stimulating planning for effective and efficient hunger relief programs.
- Conducting advocacy, networking, research, education and awareness activities surrounding the issue of hunger.
Who we are. What we do.
We're your friends and neighbors, committed to making hunger a thing of the past in our state. The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance (AHRA) is a non-profit collaborative network of hunger relief organizations throughout Arkansas. We work with local, state and federal organizations - and, most importantly, with people like you - to keep food on the tables of our fellow Arkansans who need it most. In fact, the Alliance and its members provided more than 25 million pounds of food to hungry Arkansans in 2009.
The Alliance was formed in 2004 with 6 founding members. Today the organization includes over 100 different members including food bank members, local hunger relief agencies, state level hunger programs and hunger advocates from around the state that work daily to reduce hunger in Arkansas. The Alliance has been successful over the past two years at developing a gleaning network in the state and securing over 400,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for needy Arkansans. Additionally, the Alliance has acquired 2.2 million pounds of food this year and distributed it to regional food banks throughout the state.
The Alliance was also successful in procuring state dollars that will be used to purchase food and to provide for capacity building grants to local hunger relief organizations. The Alliance provides staff support and assistance to the Arkansas Legislative Hunger Caucus and will provide general improvement dollars to selected hunger relief organizations in each of the house legislative districts over the next year.
